EdgegearEdgegear the watch band of the future and now…

When I first saw Edgegear I was intrigued and really keen to try out this latest piece of awesome running kit and so I decided to approach @Edgegear on twitter and asked if I could review their revamped watch band/strap. I never thought anymore of the DM until Andrew replied and offered me the chance to try this strap out for myself..

It arrived in the post with a connection for my Garmin 220 which might I add is Garmin specific there are a range of different fittings for most types of running and smart watches for example the Apple smart watch. If I had actually followed the instructions on how to attach the straps to my watch it wouldn’t have taken a half an hour …!!!:) I guess another lesson learned:)

I took my new gadget out for a test run the next morning in the pitch dark of early morning and with a little adjusting and also remembering that my watch was not in the conventional position helped:). It was awesome not having to lift my sleeve to look at my pacing and distance. So far this is an awesome piece of kit and I have got some real interest from other runners and cyclists. My wife who isn’t a runner and son who is a footballer do not really see the benefits of the positioning and the practicalities of this watch band  because they are not runner’s or cyclists

 Since doing the draft for this blog I have acquired an additional piece of kit and another awesome watch from Garmin the 920xt..And I was very kindly sent another watch band which fits the 920 even better than the 220(A huge thank you to Andy).. Can’t wait to try it out on my long run tomorrow ;).

The only fault well…If you can call it a fault is that the watch band doesn’t have a quick release so that you can change from athletic mode to working day mode..But the awesome people at EdgeGear have informed me that they are working on it and that it is only a matter of time before the band becomes even more user friendly and adaptable..

A little bit of feedback for Domeaseoil

A few weeks ago I entered a competition on the off chance that I could be lucky…And low and behold my lucky number 22 came out and I was fortunate enough to win a bottle of Domeaseoil.

My running has been all over the place because of work and an old shoulder injury…So when this oil arrived I used it the very first day directly after I had a hot bath , I applied it to my very sore shoulder and my legs..It really gives a lovely warming sensation. The thing I found awesome was that even though it is a massage oil it’s not at all greasy and comes off your hands with no hassle.

Just to be as clear as possible, DOMs or delayed onset muscle soreness is relieved and not eradicated by this totally bio oil, don’t think there is any easy way of avoiding Doms? but that doesn’t mean you can’t help by relieving the symptoms a little.

Thank you C for letting me try this product and I will be buying some more in the not too distant future..In my opinion a great product.

Natures own Blackcurrants into a supplement….

As most of you who have met me on social media and in person, know I am totally passionate about running and anything that makes running a little easier and I say a little because to me who likes to push  to the verge and often beyond my limitations having a new gadget or a supplement that eases the  constant pounding I give my body always helps:)

In this instance its a brilliant product that is produced in New Zealand like the awesome Manuka honey it has many health benefits like energy boosting properties which I only realised recently because the kind team at CurranzSport sent me a 2 month supply which has since been completed . I definitely noticed a decrease in energy levels since finishing the course and I am not recovering as quickly or feeling as spritely.

I started off with 2 per day for the first week to get them into my system and then took 2 on the days I did my training runs or strength sessions and only used 1 on my off days..About 2 or 3 weeks ago I did a very hard run with the group I run with, but instead of feeling spent after the run I was able to maintain and did an intense sparring session after. Felt absolutely amazing!!

These little beauties are the new way forward at Curranzsports and to be totally honest if I had the funds to continue using this supplement I would definitely continue using them, unfortunately being an adult scholar has its downfalls they are well worth the money. I was going to write a conclusion but decided that there isn’t one yet because this product is so versatile it doesn’t necessarily have to be just for overly active people but for anyone who wants to take a healthy approach to life in general..If you want to feel more energetic and less lethargic then this is definitely for you.

A review of Protein Bars

I’m always on the look out for foods that are easy to carry on long runs and I was fortunate enough to be given the chance to try these awesome wafer protein bars and go whey protein bars. I was sent a very generous selection of these bars with three different flavours , well actually four different flavours with the” SoGood!” whey protein bar, which is  delicious and delivers 30% of your required protein intake, these bars are more specific for body building but in my opinion would be a good source of energy on a long run giving you the energy requirements when you need it most.

The protein wafer bars were also very tasty and came in three flavours namely Strawberry, Chocolate and Vanilla. From my experience with most whey protein powders …strawberry is never 100% “strawberry” flavour you know on the first bite that it is made from whey protein however it still doesn’t disappoint because it is covered with a light coating of chocolate on the outside and is deliciously sweet and of course I have a very sweet tooth:) .

The chocolate protein bar was really delicious and definitely ticked all of the boxes for flavour ,texture and if you didn’t know it was a protein bar you’d think it was just a normal chocolate bar that you’d buy in a shop.

The Vanilla protein bar was good but some of the Vanilla flavouring wasn’t coming through and a suggestion would bee to try  a lemon based extract which would really give it a nice zing and  enhance the Vanilla flavour.

Would I use these bars for my long runs? Most definitely, but my favourites would definitely be The ” SoGood!”bar because of its amazing flavour and the white chocolate covering with yummy coconut on top , my second favourite would definitely be the chocolate covered whey layered bar. Third and fourth would be the strawberry and vanilla bars.

These bars are laden with calories and protein and definitely not for anyone who only trains now and again. So if you are a weight lifter or in my case an ultra runner than these would be ideal as a snack between sessions or on a long run.

A very big thanks or go maithe agat, goes out to the people at The Health Hut I hope we can work together with other products because I am looking for a good magnesium supplement and Bccas.and always keen on trying out new products.

 

Training with a program based on science and hard work.

It has always been my experience that hard work, blood and tears, is the only way forward. Well that’s all changed in the past few years with all the media and science out there. When I ran my first Comrades Marathon in 1998 I was running seriously long mileage because then ..it was the in thing , to run 89km you needed to run at least 2-3000kms in 6 months even at that you weren’t guaranteed to finish especially as the Comrades route is really tough. Up to 6-8months ago I was doing exactly that and in the course of running so much mileage I was struck with way too many injuries. I was desperate to run injury free and as runner’s we get really irate and frustrated,so when a member from Team-Mpg approached me to trial their program I grabbed at the chance to try something that top triathletes, duathletes and swimmers are using. Not only is it for elite athletes it’s based on each individual athlete no matter your fitness level there is a program that’ll suit your needs.

If like myself you have been plagued with injuries for the last few months or maybe years this is definitely something to look into. It’s not a quick fix but if you’re a hard worker and you’re keen to up your anti with less, to gain more. This is where you can see the science and bios of people who are using this revolutionary new training program.  I have PBd 3 times in the last 2 months and even though I do work really hard I definitely can’t take all the credit because the training methodology is totally different to what I would have been used to. You never really know what to expect from week to week, it reminds me a little bit about video that Arnie made where he says that in order to build muscle you need to shock it , I guess the same or similar scenario applies to running.

I was given these kicks from a good pal of mine, who just couldn’t get the feel of them. Thanks Simon 👍.

I haven’t really got a decent feel of them until I started putting in longer mileage. They are in my opinion definitely comfortable,bouncy but also feel heavy and sluggish, definitely for the extra long haul. I suppose if I had thicker socks they would probably feel better, it’s all about trial and error eh?

So I’m not entirely convinced even though they seem comfortable for the long run..I have removed the original lacing system and replaced them with old laces that I had this seems to help with the overall snuggness of the kicks..
As for speed…maybe when the injury has healed it might be different..who knows?? Also the grip on the sole doesn’t do well off road and can be very slippery definitely made for road running..
I’m going to give it a few more long runs before I make my final judgment..

Since writing about The Hoka ones I have run in them again and well definitely know now that are not meant for me to run in because I have high arches and weird shaped toes..the toe box is way to small and thus the ice treatment… Don’t know which is worse..the pain of my toe or the pain from the ice..!!??😂👍

Anyway final verdict the Hoka’s are comfortable for walking in but for running in definitely not made for my weirdly shaped feet. They are everything you’d need for a long haul if your feet suit the narrow toe box. Unfortunately these just aren’t made for me really can’t afford any more injuries or set backs.
